At our CrossFit gym in Oklahoma City, I sit down with people every week for what we call a No-Sweat Intro.
And almost every conversation starts the same way.
I ask, “What are your fitness goals?”
Usually, I hear one of two things.
“I want to lose weight.”
Or, “I want to gain weight.”
And that’s fine.
It’s just almost never the real answer.
It’s the safe answer. The one everybody says because it sounds normal. It doesn’t expose anything. It doesn’t make you admit what you actually want. It doesn’t force you to say out loud what kind of life you’re really chasing.
But I’ve learned not to leave it there.
So I ask again.
“Okay. If you lose the weight, what does that do for you?”
They answer.
Then I ask again.
“And if that happens, how is your life better?”
That’s when everything changes.
That’s the five-second moment.
That’s when a mom who thought she wanted to lose ten pounds finally says what she really wants:
“I want more energy for my family.”
“I want to stop being exhausted all the time.”
“I want to feel confident again.”
“I want to be the kind of mom who can keep up, show up, and still have something left at the end of the day.”
Now we’re finally talking about the real goal.
Because nobody really wants to lose ten pounds.
They want the life they think those ten pounds will give them.
