Are you willing to be terrible at something in order to be the person you want to be?

For the last year and a half, I’ve had a clear vision of who I wanted to become.

Not a goal.Not something I’d check off.

A version of myself.

The kind of person people come to when life gets heavy.

Someone who listens.

Someone who’s present.

Someone who actually cares.

Someone who can help people think clearly when everything feels messy.

That’s who I’ve been chasing.

And for a long time—even though I could see him clearly, even though I was trying to show up like him every day…

I didn’t believe I was him yet.

I thought I was working toward it.

Becoming it.

Maybe one day earning it.

But over the last couple of months, something kept happening.

People started coming to me.

Not for workouts.

Not for programming.

For real life.

Stress.

Pressure.

Decisions.

The kind of stuff that actually matters.

And while it didn’t hit me in the moment.

It hit me later—when I stepped back and looked at it.

And when it did, it hit hard.

Like it had been right in front of me the whole time.

I’m already that person.

Not someday.

Not “on the way.”

Already.

I’ve been that person from the moment I decided to be that person.

I just wasn’t very good at it yet.

And that realization changed everything.

Just Because You’re Not Good Yet Doesn’t Mean You’re Not That Person

This is where most people get stuck.

They think identity comes after skill.

It doesn’t.

Identity comes first.

Skill follows.

Think about the first iPhone.

It didn’t do much compared to what we have now.

It was slower. Simpler. Limited.

But it was still an iPhone.

It wasn’t “working toward becoming one.”

It already was one.

Just an early version.

That’s you.

If you do what that person does—

You are that person.

You’re just the early version of them.

Why You Keep Saying “I’m Not There Yet” (Even in Fitness)

I see this every day at our CrossFit gym in Oklahoma City.

People finish workouts and say:

“I had to scale.”

“I didn’t RX.”

“I’m not really a CrossFitter yet.”

Like they’re waiting to qualify.

But if you’re showing up to CrossFit classes,If you’re putting in effort,If you’re choosing a healthy lifestyle

You’re a CrossFitter.

Right now.

Scaling doesn’t mean you’re behind.

It means you’re doing it right.

It means you’re training in a way that actually gets you better.

But people tie identity to performance.

Instead of tying identity to action.

And that’s where they lose.

It Took Me 3 Years to Admit I Was a Business Owner

This isn’t the first time I’ve done this.

For years, I didn’t even see myself as a business owner.

I thought I was just working on a business.

Trying to build one.

Figuring it out.

But if I’m being honest?

I was already doing everything a business owner does.

Running payroll.

Leading a team.

Solving problems.

Showing up every day.

I wasn’t becoming a business owner.

I was one.

I just hadn’t accepted it yet.

And once I did, everything changed.

Because when your identity shifts, your standards shift with it.

It starts with a vision and belief!

The Only Way You’ll Ever Believe It

Here’s the part most people miss.

You won’t believe you’re that person first.

You’ll act your way into believing it.

But you do need something to aim at.

You need to see it.

Clearly.

The version of you 10 years from now.

How they think.

How they speak.

How they lead.

How they handle pressure.

You need to see that person so clearly it feels real.

Because if you can’t see it, you won’t believe it.

And if you don’t believe it, you won’t act on it.

But once you see it…

You don’t wait.

You start acting like that person today.

You’re Not Afraid of Failing—You’re Afraid of Being New

Let’s be honest.

It’s not the work that scares you.

It’s the feeling.

Looking dumb.

Feeling behind.

Being uncomfortable.

Not being good yet.

So you stay where you are.

Because it’s familiar.

Because it’s safe.

Even if you don’t like it.

But here’s the truth:

You can stay comfortable…

Or you can become who you said you wanted to be.

You don’t get both.

That version of you you keep thinking about?

That’s your dream.

That’s your life.

That’s worth being uncomfortable for.

That’s worth being new for.

You’re New—And That’s Exactly Where You’re Supposed to Be

You’re not behind.

You’re not failing.

You’re new.

And if you want to be great at anything new, you must first be willing to suck at it.

That’s not a flaw in the process.

That is the process.

You don’t become great first.

You become it.

Then you get better.

Then you get great.

That’s how it works.

Always.

This Is a Daily Choice—Not a Lifetime Burden

Don’t overcomplicate this.

You don’t have to figure out forever.

You don’t have to be perfect.

You just have to choose it today.

  • Today you show up

  • Today you act like that person

  • Today you make the better decision

Then you do it again tomorrow.

That’s it.

That’s how people in Oklahoma City fitness communities actually change their lives.

Not through motivation.

Through repeated identity-based choices.

The Truth Most People Need to Hear

You’re not waiting to become that person.

Right now.

Every single day.

Just because you’re not good at it yet…

Doesn’t mean you’re not it.
